DTE Energy wanted to offer competitive benefits that took a modern approach to wellness. This would get the company closer to its ultimate goal of being ranked in the top 10 percent of its industry.

The Story

To meet their goal, DTE Energy would need to redesign its fitness space, which hadn’t been remodeled since the 1920s. DTE Energy hired EXOS to design and manage the modern fitness center they desired for their corporate office. “We needed to create a positive experience that would attract more members and increase engagement and usage,” said Jim O’Leary, senior vice president of operations at EXOS.

But designing and developing a fitness center for DTE Energy was going to require more than adding gym equipment and giving employees access. “We wanted to make sure every person who used the space would feel comfortable when they walked in,” said O’Leary.

“Other providers fill the space with traditional equipment, but our approach is different,” said O’Leary, explaining that EXOS bases equipment on the size and needs of the population. EXOS also staffs three full-time performance specialists at DTE Energy who lead group exercise classes and coach employees. A registered dietitian hosts small group lessons and one-on-one consultations.

EXOS installed EXOS Circuit — a technology featuring looping exercise videos focused on improving movement quality that employees can follow on their own time. EXOS also designed an inviting reception area to avoid intimidating employees, and once employees step on the training floor, equipment is strategically placed.

People are just as important as programming when it comes to attracting members and helping them achieve their goals.
Where you place equipment can either make it easier or more difficult for members to complete and enjoy their workouts.
Incorporating space in the layout for people to gather and eat helps increase engagement.
