the challenge

Previously specialized in childhood development and senior programs, the team at the Shames Jewish community center wanted to diversify programming and attract more active adults.

The Story

For 90 years, Shames Jewish community center has welcomed residents in Westchester County to gather and get involved. However, the facility wasn’t known for its fitness amenities. It had just two part-time personal trainers and 25 group exercise classes per week and needed more staff and equipment to attract a larger membership base.

They partnered with EXOS to expand their 1,500-square-foot fitness facility. With about 400 active members at the time, everything that went into the new facility would need to show the community they were setting a new bar — that they could serve people at all levels of fitness.

Did You

One year after partnering with EXOS, monthly check-ins increased by more than 4,000.

the solution

“They helped us quadruple our membership in just over a year and significantly increase our footprint in the community.”

Andrew Ergas, executive director of Shames Jewish community center

Because the center had such successful early childhood programs, marketing new amenities to the program participants' parents helped draw in more active adults. EXOS worked closely with Shames Jewish community center’s executive team to restructure memberships and identify the types of programming and staff that were needed.

This included three managers, 12 fitness center staff members, and 31 group exercise instructors. EXOS created a total of 60 weekly group fitness classes and added more than 50 pieces of cardio and strength equipment. The new facility also included a pool, gymnasium, new locker rooms, and a functional training room.

Strategic community center programming brings people together and can serve all ages.
Adding innovative training equipment helped revamp Shames’ fitness amenities and attract new audiences.
Group fitness offerings include functional movement training to help people decrease and prevent stubborn pains.
